Don’t mistreat children with disabilities—Macoda

Malawi Council for Disability Affairs (Macoda) has warned parents and guardians of children with disabilities to stop preventing them from accessing education.

Speaking on Monday in Salima when Action for Progress donated 24 tricycles to persons with disabilities in the district, Macoda director-general George Chiusiwa said it was against the Persons with Disability Act to conceal or lock someone with disability in a house.

“The implications of hiding someone with a disability are very severe. Persons with disabilities have the right to enjoy every right that everyone enjoys,” he said.

Chiusiwa said they will ensure that persons with disabilities enjoy their right to mobility.

He said: “Assistive devices are important to ease challenges that persons with disabilities face. Persons with disabilities must live an independent life.”

Action for Progress administrative officer Grivin Kasalika said the donation sought to alleviate mobility challenges persons with disabilities were facing.

“We hope that the donation will help persons with disabilities to participate in community development and for others, going to school,” he said.
